The Padma Awards, one of India's highest civilian honours, were instituted in 1954. This year the Padma Awards 2023 were announced by the Government of India on the eve of 74th Republic Day. President Draupadi Murmu has given his assent for the presentation of 106 Padma Awards in 2023, including 3 duet cases. The list includes 91 Padma Shri Awards, 9 Padma Bhushan Awards and 6 Padma Vibhushan Awards.
Padma Awards The Padma Awards, one of the country's highest civilian honours, are given in 3 different categories ━ Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The award is given in various fields, including arts, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, business and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports and civil service.
Padma Awards are conferred with the "Padma Vibhushan" for exceptional and distinguished service. and "Padma Bhushan" for exceptionally meritorious service and "Padma Shri" for exceptionally meritorious service in any field.

Some facts:

  • Posthumously awarded Padma Vibhushan ━ ORS icon Dilip Mahalnabis (Medical), Samajwadi Party founder and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav (Public Affairs), and architect Balkrishna Doshi (Other-Architecture) have been awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
  • During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, it was announced to honor Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis posthumously with Padma Vibhushan, who served people in refugee camps. Dr. Mahalanabis discovered the formula of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution). His discovery had saved more than 50 million lives. Dr. Mahalanabis had died in October last.
