Weight classes in the Boxing Game

Weight Classes in Boxing

In the 19th and again in the 20th century, the popularity of boxing led to the formation of weight classes other than the heavyweight class to eliminate the hurdle of smaller competitors to allow the opponents to accept excessive weight. Some of these weight divisions originated in the United States, others in Great Britain.
Boxers divided by weight categories. In this way, each boxer fights with another boxer of equal weight, which makes the fight more fair and balanced. Men's boxing traditionally consisted of eight weight classes. More divisions were added, and professional governing bodies now recognize a total of 17 weight classes, whose current names were established in 2015 by major boxing organizations. The upper limit of these classes is limited as follows:

Competition in male weight categories

DIVISIONS POUNDS KILOS
Super Brianweight 105 lbs 47.620
Light Flyweight 108 lbs 48.988
Flyweight 112 lbs 50.802
Super Flyweight 115 lbs 52.163
Bantamweight 118 lbs 53.524
Super Bantamweight 122 lbs 55.338
Featherweight 126 lbs 57.153
Super Featherweight 130 lbs 58.967
Lightweight 135 lbs 61.235
Light Welterweight 140 lbs 63.503
Welterweight 147 lbs 66.678
Light Middleweight 154 lbs 69.853
Middleweight 160 lbs 72.575
Super Middleweight 170 lbs 77.110
Light Heavyweight 175 lbs 79.379
Cruisierweight 200 lbs 90.719
Heavyweight 200 lbs plus 90.719+

In World and National Boxing Sports, the weight limit must be strictly adhered to, although fighters are often allowed to weigh the day before competition by contract. If a boxer exceeds the limit, he is generally given less time to make the prescribed weight. If that fails, the bout is usually pushed forward, but if the overweight fighter wins the bout, the title he was fighting for is declared vacant.
