India finished seventh in the 1976 Olympic Games in Canada.

The team that won the Olympic gold seven times made a strong comeback in the 1980 Olympic Games in the Soviet Union and claimed the gold medal. Till 1980, India's men's hockey team had won 8 gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals.
The Indian hockey team's worst phase in the Olympic game since 1980, in which India could not travel to the semi-finals, except for a medal, in 2016. Once the team could not even qualify.
The Indian men's hockey team led by Manpreet Singh won the bronze medal in the 2020 Olympic Games.
