India ranked second in the 1960 Olympic Games held in Italy and for the first time the country could win a silver medal in the game of hockey. The country won the gold medal in the game of hockey in the 1964 Olympic Games in Japan, Mexico in 1968 and India won the bronze medal in the 1972 Olympic Games in Germany. India finished seventh in the 1976 Olympic Games in Canada.

The team that won the Olympic gold seven times made a strong comeback in the 1980 Olympic Games in the Soviet Union and claimed the gold medal. Till 1980, India's men's hockey team had won 8 gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals.
The Indian hockey team's worst phase in the Olympic game since 1980, in which India could not travel to the semi-finals, except for a medal, in 2016. Once the team could not even qualify.
The Indian men's hockey team led by Manpreet Singh won the bronze medal in the 2020 Olympic Games. India lost to Belgium in the semi-finals and the team's dream of winning the gold or silver medal was shattered, but after defeating Germany in the bronze medal match, India finished third and won the bronze medal.
