Hockey is a major sport in India, and has always held a special place. The country has got a lot of respect from the game of hockey. Dhyan Chand was an Indian hockey player, considered one of the best in the history of the game. Balbir Singh Sr. is another great Indian hockey player of the past. Hockey tournaments in India have played a vital role in discovering and nurturing the talent and skills of these legendary players. The hockey team had excelled. Even before independence, the great Lance Naik was none other than Dhyanchand. Out of the top most talented Indian team, he had led India to 3 gold medals in 3 consecutive Olympics (1928, '32, '36).
Internationally, the Indian hockey team won gold in London 1948, Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956, a single silver in Rome 1960 and another gold in Tokyo in 1964. This was followed by the beginning of the decline as India won bronze in Mexico City 1972 and Munich 1976, followed by gold in 1980 in Moscow.
India's hockey team created history in Tokyo Olympics 2020. India won the bronze medal. India achieved this by defeating Germany 5-4. India's hockey team has won an Olympic medal after 41 years. In the semi-final, India was defeated by Belgium, while Germany was defeated by Australia. The Indian hockey team has won an Olympic medal for the first time since 1980.
