 Para-athlete K Y Venkatesh honored with Padma Shri on 9 November 2021

9 November, 7 sportspersons were honored with the Padma Shri award. The name of KY Venkatesh (Para Sportsman) of Karnataka was also included in these players.
Para-athlete K Y Venkatesh was awarded the Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday. KY Venkatesh started his career in the year 1994, he represented India in the first Paralympics held in Germany. Led India in the fifth Paralympic Games in 2009 and won 17 medals. KY Venkatesh was awarded the Padma Shri for his invaluable contribution to sports and its development. Venkatesh hails from Bangalore, Karnataka. His height is 4 feet 2 inches.
When Venkatesh reached the stage, the President, who was on the high platform, realized that the four-foot para athlete might face some trouble during the award, so he himself got off the stage and came on a level surface and presented him with the award.
The President honored Para-athlete KY Venkatesh by stepping down from the stage. During this, the simplicity of President Ram Nath Kovind also won the hearts of the people. During this the hall reverberated with thunderous applause.

KY Venkatesh is an Indian para-athlete and shot putter. He won his first gold medal for India in shot put in Australia in 1999. In 1994, he represented India at the first International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Berlin, Germany. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, on 9 November 2021.
KY Venkatesh made the nation proud when he was the first Indian athlete to represent the country at the Games and won medals in athletics. Let us tell you that like the Paralympics, the World Dwarf Games are held once every four years.
KY Venkatesh started his career in 1994 when he represented India at the first International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Berlin, Germany.
KY Venkatesh won silver medal for Badminton in LG World Cup 2002 and 3 gold and 2 silver medals in shotput, discus throw and javelin throw in Open Track and Field Championship 2004. He also won one gold medal, two silver medals. A bronze medal at the 2004 Swedish Open Track and Field Championship.
The World Dwarf Games, 2005 was entered in the Limca Book of Records for winning the most medals.
At the 2006 European Open Championships, he won a gold medal in the hockey event, a silver medal in the football and basketball events, and a bronze medal in the badminton event.

Limca Book of Records in the name of Y Venkatesh:

The name of Y Venkatesh is also in the Limca Book of Records. He entered the 'Limca Book of Records' by winning six medals in various sports at the 4th World Dwarf Games in 2005.
Led India in the 5th Dwarf Olympic Games in 2009, where India won 17 medals. Venkatesh has now retired from the world of professional sports. Presently he is the secretary of Karnataka Para Badminton Association.

  • KY Venkatesh won 3 gold and 2 silver medals in shotput, discus throw and javelin throw in 2004 Open Track and Field Championships.
  • KY Venkatesh won a gold medal, 2 silver medals and a bronze medal at the Swedish Open Track and Field Championships in 2004.
  • Won a silver medal for India in the badminton event of the LG World Cup in 2002.
  • Won Gold Medal in Shot Put event at Southern Cross Multi Disability Championship in 1999.
  • On 2021, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award.
