India created history by defeating Indonesia 3-0 in the final of the Thomas Cup 2022 held in Bangkok. India has won this cup for the first time after 73 years. Indonesia has won it the most 14 times so far.

Thomas Cup 2022:

India's men's badminton team created history on 15 May. For the first time in 73 years, India became the winner of the Thomas Cup. The Indian badminton team won the Thomas Cup. The Sports Ministry has announced a reward of one crore to the players. In the final match, the Indian men's team defeated Indonesia 3-0. The players of 14-time champion Indonesia gave a tough fight but in the end India won. Lakshya Sen got off to a great start by defeating Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 8-21, 21-17, 21-16. In doubles, Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty defeated Mohammad Ahsan-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21, 21-19. In the third match, Srikanth defeated Jonathan 21-15, 23-21 to make India champion for the first time.

What is Thomas Cup? and when did it start:

Thomas Cup is a badminton tournament in which 16 teams currently participate. The idea of organizing Thomas Cup tournament for badminton players was first given by English badminton player Sir George Allan Thomas. He himself was also a great badminton player. George Alan Thomas aspired that there should be a badminton tournament like the Football World Cup and the Davis Cup of tennis. After this the Thomas Cup was organized for the first time in 1948-49. Earlier this tournament was held every 3 years, but since 1982 it is organized every 2 years.

Only 6 countries have won the Thomas Cup so far:

Since 1948-49, the Thomas Cup has been held only 32 times, of which only 6 countries have been able to win. Among these, Indonesia has been the most successful team, having won the Thomas Cup 14 times so far. Apart from Indonesia, the countries that won the Thomas Cup are China 10 times, Malaysia 5 times and Denmark, Japan and India 1-1 times. The member countries of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) participate in the Thomas Cup. By the way, most of this title has been won by Asian countries. Denmark won the Thomas Cup for the first time as a non-Asian country after beating Indonesia 3–2 in the 2016 final.

  • Doubles: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala-Krishna Prasad Garaga, MR Arjun-Dhruv Kapila.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated all the players for this achievement by tweeting. He tweeted, 'Congratulations to the Indian badminton team for their historic performance. Congratulations to the entire team and best wishes for the future. The whole country is proud of your victory. This win will encourage young players.

    President Ram Nath Kovind congratulated :

    President Kovind has also congratulated the team on India's victory in the Thomas Cup. The President tweeted, "Heartfelt congratulations to the Indian badminton team for their first ever Thomas Cup victory! The team has created history by setting the highest standards for the future. Winning is less to be commended for the skill, flexibility and flair shown by the team. India is proud of the champions.
