The international calendar consists of several marathon events World Marathon Majors (WMM) (known for sponsorship reasons as the Abbott World Marathon Majors), a championship-style competition for marathon runners that began in 2006. A points-based competition founded on marathon running recognized as the highest-profile on the calendar, the series includes annual races for the cities of Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York.

Each edition of the series recognizes and incorporates the results of the major global championship marathons held that year, usually on a one-time lapped course. These races are the biennial IAAF World Championships Marathon and the quadrennial Olympic Games Marathon.
