List of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award Winners...
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award officially known as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, formerly known as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in sports and games, is India's highest sports honour. It is provided annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
It is the highest sporting honor for Indian sportspersons. The recipients are selected by a committee constituted by the ministry and awarded internationally for their performance in the field of sports over a period of four years. The award consists of a medal, a certificate and a cash prize.
Established in 1991-1992, the award was given on the basis of performance by a sportsperson in a year. Based on the suggestions made by the 2014 Awards Selection Committee, the Ministry revised the criteria in February 2015 to consider performance over a period of four years. Nominations for a given year are accepted until 30 April or the end of April, with no more than two players nominated for each sport discipline. The twelve-member committee evaluates an athlete's performance in international events such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. The committee subsequently submits its recommendations to the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports for further approval. The award from 1991-2021 was named after Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India.
With effect from August 6, 2021, the award is named after Major Dhyan Chand, an Indian field hockey player who is regarded as one of the greatest field hockey players of all time, having scored more than 1000 goals in his career.
