The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in sports is the highest honor in India, and is given to those who make the country proud on the international stage. The award is named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who served from 1984-1989. It was established in 1991–92 and the first recipient of the award was chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand.
