The FIFA Player of the Year Award, established in 1991, is an award given annually to the player who is considered the best in the world. In 2010, the FIFA World Player of the Year award was merged with the Ballon d'Or in a six-year partnership to form the FIFA Ballon d'Or. Until 2016 FIFA went by the name Ballon d'Or. FIFA and France Football then decided to break the partnership and give out. separate award. The first Best FIFA award was presented in January 2017 which was won by Cristiano Ronaldo. Former World Cup-winning Germany captain Lothar Matthaus has won the FIFA Player of the Year award for the first time. Since 2004, the voting process has been based on a shortlist of 35 players produced by FIFA, from whom the team captain, national team manager and select journalists vote for the winner.
