Neeraj Chopra (born 24 December 1997) is a track and field athlete competing in the javelin throw. Neeraj represented India in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 with a javelin throw of 87.58m, making his place in the final with the best javelin to win the gold medal. He has created history by winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He is the second Indian after Anju Bobby George to win a gold medal in athletics at a world championship level. Neeraj Chopra Biography

Neeraj Chopra has created history by winning the first-ever gold medal for India in the Tokyo Olympics. The athlete medal that the country was dreaming for for 121 years, Neeraj Kumar turned it into reality on the strength of his spear in the javelin.
Neeraj Chopra was born on 24 December 1997 in a farming community in Khandra, a village in Panipat, Haryana state. In Neeraj's family, his father Satish Kumar is a small farmer by profession and his mother Saroj Devi is a housewife. Neeraj got interested in javelin throw when he was only 11 years old and used to watch Jai Choudhary practice at Panipat Stadium. Neeraj did his early studies from Panipat. After completing his early studies, Neeraj Chopra joined a BBA college in Chandigarh and did his graduation from there.
Neeraj Chopra is an Indian athlete associated with the javelin throw sport of track and field and has represented the country at the national and international level. Along with being an athlete, Neeraj Chopra is also posted as a Subedar in the Indian Army and has also been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in the Army for his excellent performance while in the Army.

Neeraj Chopra continued to practice in Javelin along with studies, during which he won many medals at the national level. Neeraj won gold in the 2016 IAAF World U-20 Championship in Poland by throwing 86.48 meters of javelin. Due to which the Army appointed him as Naib Subedar as a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Rajputana Regiment.
Neeraj had said in an interview that, till date no one has got a government job in my family, I am the first member of my joint family who is going to do a government job, it is a matter of great happiness for our family. With this I can continue my training as well as help my family financially.

The final match was held on 7 August at 4:30 pm. In this match, Neeraj Chopra has won the gold medal by performing brilliantly. Recorded his name in the pages of history of India. He had set the record of the highest distance of 87.58 in the first 2 rounds out of 6 rounds in the final match, which no player could break in the next 4 rounds, in the end Neeraj's position remained at number one and he won the gold. 
Neeraj Chopra on Wednesday made his way to the final at the Tokyo Olympics with a perfect javelin throw to stake his claim for the first Olympic medal in track and field. Neeraj Chopra topped the qualification with an effort of 86.65m, becoming the first Indian javelin player to make it to the Olympic final. Due to which the country has got the hope of Gold Medal from Neeraj Chopra.

  • In the Under 16 National Junior Championships held in Lucknow in 2012, Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal with a throw of 68.46 meters.
  • In the National Youth Championship, Neeraj Chopra had finished second in the year 2013 and after that also made a position in the IAAF World Youth Championship.
  • Neeraj Chopra broke the age group record with a throw of 81.04m in the Inter University Championships. This competition was held in the year 2015.
  • Neeraj Chopra had set a new record by throwing 86.48 meters in the Junior World Championships in the year 2016 and won the gold medal.
  • In 2016, Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in the first round of the South Asian Games by throwing a throw of 82.23 meters.
  • In the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Neeraj Chopra won another gold medal by throwing 86.47 meters.
  • In 2018 itself, Neeraj Chopra threw 88.06 meters in Jakarta Asian Games and brought glory to India by winning the gold medal.
  • Neeraj Chopra is the first Indian javelin thrower to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. Apart from this, Neeraj Chopra is the second player to win gold medal in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in the same year. Earlier this record was set by Milkha Singh in the year 1958.
