The National Rugby League (NRL) is the top professional league for men's rugby league teams in Australia, the National Rugby League competition is contested by 16 teams, 15 based in Australia and one based in New Zealand. The National Rugby League is the current incarnation of Australia's top-level domestic rugby league competition, which evolved from Sydney's club competition, and has been running since 1908. However, it originated as the New South Wales Rugby League and was renamed the National Rugby League (NRL) in 1998.
