The Arjuna Award for Sports in India is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for outstanding achievements in the field of sports at the international level. First presented in the year 1961, the National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports. The 'Arjuna Award for Excellence in Sports and Games' is given for good performance over a period of last four years and for showing leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of discipline.

In the year 2022, only 25 sportspersons received the Arjuna Award for their outstanding performance in sports.

  • India's football Olympian PK Banerjee was among the 20 recipients of the Arjuna Award in its inaugural edition in 1961.
  • Anna Lumsden Hockey player was the first woman to win the Arjuna Award.
  • It was India's highest sporting honor before the Khel Ratna came into existence.
  • As per rules, a Khel Ratna winner cannot be nominated for the Arjuna Award. However, the Arjuna winner can be nominated for the Khel Ratna.
  • The Government of India revised the criteria for the Arjuna Award over the years. As per the revised guidelines, a sportsperson should not only have consistently excelled at the international level for the last four years, but also be recommended for excellence for that year.
