The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council on Friday announced that the league stage games of IPL 2022 will be played at four venues in Mumbai and Pune for the 15th edition of the tournament. IPL will start from 26 March 2022 and the final of the tournament will be played on 29 May 2022.
The format of IPL 2022 will see a change as the 10 teams will be divided into groups of five, but each team will play 14 games.
According to the grouping released by the BCCI, Group A includes Mumbai Indians, KKR, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Supergiants.
Group B consists of Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.
IPL 2022 teams have been grouped (A and B) according to the number of titles and number of finals. Firstly, the IPL has been grouped according to performance where Group A has MI (Team 1) with five titles as the first team. Accordingly, the first team in Group B is CSK (Team 2) with four titles. Team 3 is again placed in Group A and that is KKR with two titles and respective Team 4 is placed in Group B which is SRH with only title. Team 5 in Group A is again Rajasthan Royals (1st title) and corresponding team in Group B is 6 RCB, having played three finals.
Over the years, the IPL has been an eight-team affair, with each team playing each other twice in a round-robin league stage to complete 14 games.
This group league format is not new in the IPL as it was used once a decade ago when Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers were part of the Kerala League.
