Arjuna Award
The Arjuna Award, officially the Arjuna Award for Sports Outstanding Performance, is a sports honor given by the Republic of India. The award is named after Arjuna, a character from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata of ancient India. He is one of the Pandavas, who is portrayed as a skilled archer who wins Draupadi's swarmbar in marriage and in the Kurukshetra war, Lord Krishna becomes his charioteer, and teaches him the sacred knowledge of the Gita. In Hindu mythology, he is seen as a symbol of hard work, dedication and concentration. Awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Prior to the introduction of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1991–1992, the Arjuna Award was India's highest sporting honour. Nominations for the award are received from all government recognized National Sports Federations, Olympic Association of India, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sports Promotion and Control Board, State and Union Territory Governments and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjun, Dhyan Chand and Dronacharya Award Winners of the previous years. The recipients are selected by a committee constituted by the ministry, and awarded internationally for "good performance in the field of sports over a period of four years" and for showing "leadership qualities, sportsmanship and discipline".
The award includes "a bronze statuette of Arjuna, certificate, ceremonial dress, and a cash prize of ₹15 lakh (US$21,000)."
