British Blind Sport...
British Blind Sport (BBS) provides the opportunity for visually impaired people to participate in sports. As a charity they pride themselves on 'making a clear difference through sport' because we know that taking the first step in participating in a sport or recreational activity can change lives for the better. Since its inception in 1976, BBS has become a voice for the visually impaired in the world of sport and leisure in the United Kingdom and internationally. It also leads in the UK with the vision classification for Paralympic athletes. It is headquartered in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.
It was founded in 1976 as the British Association for Sporting and Recreational Activities for the Blind (BASRAB) and changed its name to British Blind Sport in 1989. Sports and recreational activities can improve the lives of people with visual impairments by improving their health, developing self-confidence, and increasing social interaction. We encourage adults and children to participate in activities at all levels, from grassroots to the Paralympic Games.
In March 2013, Tony Larkin, sports coach at the Royal National College for the Blind, who led the British blind football team at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, was appointed patron of British blind sport. Paralympian medalist Noel Thatcher is also a mentor.
The BBS is a membership organization with a number of volunteer-led specialist sports sections. These classes offer a national program of opportunities for adults over the age of 16 in archery, cricket, football, acoustic shooting, and ten-pin-bowling.
