Kabaddi has been a popular sport in India since ancient times. Kabaddi India remains on top in the world. The game of Kabaddi is just starting to develop globally and India is at the forefront of its development. The game of Kabaddi has attracted a lot of attention in the domestic competition as well as the Pro Kabaddi League at the international level.
Kabaddi is an exciting and high-skill game, with seven players on each side. The basic objective of the game is to score points by raiding the opponent's court and touching as many defensive players as possible without getting caught in the same breath. The game is played for a duration of 40 minutes, with a 5-minute break in between the half of the game.
The origins of the game have been linked to the pre-historic times played in various forms. But the modern Kabaddi game has been played in whole of India and parts of South Asia since 1930. The All India Kabaddi Federation was formed in the year 1950 to promote the sport. The Senior National Championship started in 1952. The new body, Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) came into existence from the year 1972. It is affiliated to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), which aims to popularize the sport in India as well as in all neighboring countries.

India won gold medals for Kabaddi at the Asian Games in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014. Moreover, India players dominate the world of Kabaddi and have won all the three Kabaddi World Cups by beating Iran in the final every time.

Championships are organized at the national level to select the best players who can represent their country at the international level. Most of these players perform in international tournament games held in Asian countries.

  • Pro Kabaddi League: The Pro Kabaddi League, since its inception in 2014, has given a new format to domestic Kabaddi in India. Pro Kabaddi League is an initiative of Mashal Sports and Star India. It is the only league to bring a franchise-based format to India's indigenous sport Kabaddi. The league has revolutionized the game with amazing innovations, making it an aspirational and exciting game for players and fans alike. As a result, the game has seen tremendous growth over the past four seasons.
    Patna Pirates won the 2017 Pro Kabaddi League, hence Patna Pirates became the most successful team in the history of Pro Kabaddi League.
    The tournament features 12 teams from across the country - all of these teams face each other in a double round robin and semi-finals and finals.

  • National Kabaddi Championship:This Kabaddi Championship is the oldest recognized Kabaddi tournament in India. It was inaugurated in 1952, since then the national championship has been the major kabaddi tournament in India. It is an annual tournament and various state federations send their teams to participate and win the prestigious tournament.
    The championship has different categories in both boys and girls- sub junior, junior and senior. Tournaments take place at different times during the three years.
    In November 2017, during the 29th National Sub-Junior Kabaddi Championship, Jharkhand and in December 2017, in the 44th National Junior National Kabaddi Championship, Sports Authority of India came first in both boys and girls.
    December 2017-January 2018 Maharashtra (Men) and Himachal Pradesh (Women) secured first position in 65th Senior National Kabaddi Championship at Hyderabad.
    Indian Railways Kabaddi teams defeated Himachal Pradesh (Women) and Services (Men) in the respective final matches of the 67th Senior National Kabaddi Championship held.
    Federation Cup: Since the year 2013, Federation Cup has become one of the recognized Kabaddi tournaments in India. Like the National Championships, it is an annual tournament and has different categories- Sub Junior, Junior and Senior in both boys and girls. These tournaments take place at different times over the course of three years.
    In March 2018, Tamil Nadu and Haryana finished first in the 5th Junior Federation Cup for men and women.
    In February 2018, Services and Indian Railways topped the 3rd Senior Federation Cup for men and women.
    Beach National Kabaddi Championship: Beach National Kabaddi Championship was an out-door initiative by the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India. Beach Kabaddi follows the same rules as normal Kabaddi. The only exceptions are simply the playing surface and the number of players. This competition is only for senior category for both men and women. Beach Kabaddi completed its 10th edition in February. Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh won the 10th Beach Senior National Federation Cup for men and women in February 2018. Uttarakhand Kabaddi Association will host the 11th Beach National Kabaddi Championship.
    Departmental National Kabaddi Championship: This championship is fought by different government departments. After its inaugural season in 2009, twenty teams participated and it has since become an annual tournament. During the 9th edition, 16 teams faced off and Air India Sports Division emerged the winner of the tournament.
