List of Tennis Women's Singles and Doubles Winners in the Olympics...
Tennis was first played in England, United Kingdom in the 19th century. The first modern Olympic women's match began in the year 1900. Women were allowed to compete in singles and mixed doubles tennis events at the 1900 Olympic Games. Between 1928 and 1984, tennis was not included in the official Olympic programme. However, demonstration tennis competitions were held twice, first in 1968 and later in 1984. It was reinstated as a medal sport in 1988.
Kathleen McCain Godfree (one gold, two silver and two bronze) and Venus Williams (four gold, one silver) are the all-time record holders for the most Olympic medals in tennis. Serena Williams and Venus Williams won a record four gold medals.
Only on three occasions has an athlete won the title in the same event at two Olympic Games: Gigi Fernandez and Mary Jo Fernandez in women's doubles in 1992 and 1996, Serena Williams and Venus Williams in women's doubles in 2008 and 2012, in single.
