The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is an international men's hockey championship that has taken place every year since 2003, the first edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup began as a biennial competition in 1983. After its growth and popularity after 1998, the tournament became an annual event. The tournament is named after Malaysia's ninth Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (King), Sultan Azlan Shah, a supporter of field hockey. And since 2003 till now it is conducted on annual basis. Australia is the most successful nation in the history of the tournament since 1983 as they have won the title 10 times so far. The first edition final was played between Australia - Pakistan and Australia won the first title of the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Cup.
