Taking a look at some of the sports stars who took a long time to rise to the limelight, experts agree that if an athlete wants to be successful at the international level, they must start early. So in the world, the grassroots focus is on locating the hidden talents rather than being molded for sporting success.

Often comes across players who started late and went on to achieve glory later in their careers. In this article, we take a look at some of the athletes from India who proved that age is just a number.

Seema Bisla (born 14 October 1993 in Rohtak, Haryana) is an Indian wrestler. She won her first significant international medal in the women's 50kg event at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Almaty in April 2021. He represented India at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She lost her first match against Tunisia's Sarra Hamdi.

Abhishek Verma (born 1 August 1989) is an Indian sports shooter. He holds a BTech in Computer Science, and tried his hand at shooting when he was studying law.
He developed an interest in the sport and at the age of 29, he made his international debut in the 10m air pistol category at the 2018 Asian Games. In his first multi-sport tournament, he won the bronze medal. In 2019, he won two gold medals at the Beijing and Rio World Cups.

Mairaj Ahmed Khan (born 2 November 1975 in Khurja, District Bulandshahr) is an Indian shooter in the shotgun skeet discipline. Mairaj Khan's first choice is cricket and she has represented Uttar Pradesh in various age group tournaments. In 2003, at the age of 28, he started taking shooting seriously. In 2007, Mairaj won a gold medal at the National Shooting Championship in Delhi. He again claimed the gold medal in the 2009, 2010 and 2016 editions of the championship. Mairaj won her first international gold medal and bronze medal in the skeet shooting team event and skeet shooting individual at the 2008 Singapore Open Shooting Championships. Mairaj won a gold medal at the All India Sardar Sajjan Sethi Master Shooting Championship in 2009, which he won again in 2012. In 2009, he won two silver medals in individual and team skeet shooting at the South Asian Federation Shooting Championships in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Mairaj won a gold and a silver at the National Games held in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

Eugeneson Lyngdoh (born 10 September 1986) is an Indian footballer, a footballer from Shillong pursuing a degree in electronics and telecommunications and left the course to focus on football when he was in his third year.
At the age of 28 he signed for Bengaluru FC, where he played his best football. He created history by scoring Bengaluru's first goal in Asia in the AFC Champions League Qualifier against Johor Darul Tajim. In the same campaign, he won midfielder of the season and Eugenesson made his debut for India on 12 March 2015 in a 2–0 win against Nepal in the first leg of the 2018 FIFA World Cup pre-qualifier, where he helped with the second goal.

Pranati Nayak (born 6 April 1995) is an Indian artistic gymnast. She is the daughter of a bus driver. Has been a regular name in the domestic circuit since 2012 and has been a gymnast since the age of nine.
But she started excelling on the international circuit only in the last few years. In 2017 she finished fourth in the vault at the Senior Asian Championships in Bangkok and earned a bronze medal on the vault at the 2019 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Amalraj Anthony Arputhraj (born 24 January 1986) is a professional table tennis player from Tamil Nadu, India. The Indian table tennis star first won the national title in 2012 at the age of 26.
He won a silver medal in the men's doubles event of the Commonwealth Games with Sharath Kamal and furthered the feat by winning gold in Australia's Gold Coast in 2018 at the age of 32. In the same year, he won a bronze medal at the Jakarta Civil Games. He received the Arjuna Awardee in 2017.

Sable was born on 13 September 1994 in a farming family in Mandwa, Beed district of Maharashtra. From the age of six, he ran or walked a distance of 6 km (3.7 mi) between home and school as there was no transport facility in his village. After completing 12th standard, he joined the 5 Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army, is an army officer long distance runner and has served the nation in treacherous landscapes like the Siachen Glacier and the deserts of Rajasthan.
In 2015, he participated in an inter-army cross country run and then moved to steeplechase and joined the national camp. He was 21 years old at that time. But his performance went north from 2018 when he broke the national record and became the first Indian after Dina Ram (1991) to qualify for the 2019 World Athletics Championships. He also qualified for the Asian Championships and won his first international medal silver medal at the age of 25. Sable set a new national record with a timing of 8:20.20 in the men's 3000m steeplechase event at the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships in Patiala. With this, 26-year-old Avinash broke his own record of 8:21.37 in 2019, after finishing 13th in the final of the World Athletics Championships in Doha.
