The Ranji Trophy was played in the domestic cricket championship. Which is played between several teams representing regional and state cricket associations in India. Ranji Trophy is named after Indian cricketer Ranjit Singh, who played international cricket. The competition currently involves 38 teams, with at least one representation from all 28 states and eight union territories in India. The first match was played on 4 November 1934 between Madras and Mysore.

The first trophy was introduced in 1926 by the Aga Khan III. The trophy was presented for the first time in a jumping competition in Ireland. Initially, Switzerland, the country that won the competition three times, won the Aga Khan Trophy in 1926, 1927 and 1930.

The first tournament was held in 1948 and was won by the team from Malaya. Initially tournaments were held every three years, but since 1982 tournaments have been held every two years. Indonesia has become the most successful team by winning the cup thirteen times.
