Most iconic jersey numbers in Indian cricket...

The Board of Control for Cricket in India and the International Cricket Council have no role in allocating the best jersey numbers in cricket, allocating jersey or t-shirt numbers to cricketers. Cricketers of all countries including India choose their jersey or T-shirt according to their own. Cricketers usually have to request a number, and in most cases receive their choice if no one else wants it, but it is ultimately decided by the board and management. Players can choose any number they wish, as long as no one else on the team has taken it before.
At present jersey number 18 is allotted to Virat Kohli, jersey number 45 to Rohit Sharma and number 7 to Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

  • Rohit Sharma wanted the number 10 jersey, but he could not have it because a senior player (guess who is that? It's Sachin Tendulkar) already has it.
  • Virendra Sehwag wore the number 44 jersey, although his poor performance was at its peak during this period. He did an astrological test and found that the jersey number was unlucky. Sehwag's mother and wife recommended jersey numbers 42 and 2. Revealing this story while talking to a news channel, Sehwag said that to avoid conflict between his mother and wife, he decided to remove the jersey number from his T-shirt altogether.
  • Sachin Tendulkar's jersey was number 10 which he himself had chosen as it was lucky for him. During an interview, he told that his surname (Tendulkar) comes with 10 numbers, so choose 10 numbers for your jersey or T-shirt. When Tendulkar retired from cricket, the BCCI stated that they wanted to retire the number 10 jersey as well, but in one match the number was assigned to Shardul Thakur for his debut match.
